King & Spalding has teamed up with 14 independent firms from around the globe, including Ireland’s Arthur Cox and offshore firm Walkers, to form a new alliance focused on employment law and related areas.
The Bectella (benefits, executive compensation, tax, employment and labour law) alliance is designed to give clients access to a worldwide network of lawyers specialising in labour law.
Between them the 15 firms will cover 20 countries in the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East and Asia.
King & Spalding New York-based employment head Kenneth Raskin was the mind behind the new alliance. He told The Lawyer that he wanted to create an alliance that would be able to advise clients not just on employment law, but also on related areas including compensation and tax. Raskin said this differentiated Bectella from existing networks focusing on labour law.
The plan is to expand Bectella’s coverage to more countries and regions. Raskin said he was currently in contact with firms in around 80 countries.
Participation in the alliance is by invitation only, with those invited so far firms which King & Spalding had worked with and which achieve high directory rankings.
“It’s focused on being able to service my clients’ needs and the needs of alliance members’ clients anywhere in the world,” Raskin added. “That’s the goal here, to have a fully global alliance.”
Raskin said firms would not be tied into Bectella exclusively, but could also be members of other networks, although there would always be only one firm in each jurisdiction.
Bectella is the latest in a number of employment alliances. Ius Laboris expanded into its 44th country with Japan’s Anderson Mori & Tomotsune earlier this week, while smaller player L&E Global added a Swiss firm to its roster a fortnight ago (29 Janury 2014).
Meanwhile the largest, the Employment Law Alliance, has members in 135 countries including all 50 US states.
