Former acting inspector general for Department of Health and Human Services joins DLA Piper as chief administrative officer

Joanne M. Chiedi, former acting inspector general for the US Department of Health and Human Services, has joined global law firm DLA Piper as chief administrative officer. In her new role at DLA Piper, Chiedi will provide strategic support to the firm’s senior leadership, both domestically and internationally, and will report to the firm’s Chief Operating Officer, Bob Bratt.

Joanne joins a senior leadership team at DLA Piper that includes executive talent from companies such as Accenture, Microsoft, Booz Allen, and Hyatt, as well as veterans of the legal industry, all of whom were recruited by Bratt from across industry to drive the firm’s growth and innovation. 

At the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Chiedi led an organization of more than 1,650 auditors, evaluators, investigators, attorneys, analysts and management professionals who oversaw the integrity and efficiency of the nation’s over US$1 trillion yearly investment in federal health and human services programs. She supervised more than 300 programs administered by HHS agencies, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Administration for Children and Families, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health.

Bratt, who served as executive officer of the Department of Justice’s Civil Right Division, worked with Chiedi in her former role as deputy executive officer for the division. Bratt also oversaw the Office of Redress Administration, of which Chiedi served as deputy administrator. The US$1.64 billion program was responsible for locating, verifying and issuing payment to the estimated 82,000 Japanese Americans who were interned or otherwise denied liberty in the United States during World War II.
